The Giropay merchant service is the premier service in the German region, offering more secure payments over traditional credit or debit cards. Most merchants provide Giropay alongside other payment options but tout the dependability of Giropay.
As a security-conscious user, you might appreciate the privacy of proxies and the improved safety of Giropay. We’ve put together some simple points below.
Enable 2-factor authentication when available
In today’s interconnected age, keeping your payment details private is of the utmost importance. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) may be an option depending on your bank. 2FA requires a secondary code to authenticate any log-in attempt. Where available, you should choose 2FA when using Giropay.
Although 2FA requires an extra step to log in and make purchases, the security benefits of 2FA greatly outweigh the slight inconvenience.
Know the process
One of the main advantages of Giropay is that it keeps card numbers and account data private. Giropay uses a separate transaction token to transmit payments, which helps protect data, similar to Apple Pay.
The drawback of this approach is that chargebacks aren’t possible, so you’ll need to jump through some extra hoops to dispute a charge. The exact procedure depends on your bank and the currency of your transaction.
It’s good to save your transaction number (TAN) on your digital receipt for every payment if you need it later.
Check your bank’s support and limits
Over 1,500 banking locations currently support Giropay at the time of this guide. However, because Giropay enjoys widespread adoption around Germany, it doesn’t mean it’s endorsed everywhere. Check with your bank to ensure that they support Giropay, and ask about any terms and conditions for use.
Also, be sure to find out if there are any limits on funds or the number of transactions. While most people will never encounter the upper limits imposed by banks, having this information beforehand helps avoid confusion later.
