What Are Residential Proxies?
Residential proxies are intermediary servers that route your traffic through IP addresses that an Internet Service Provider (ISP) assigns to a physical household device. Real user IP addresses carry a higher trust score and are blocked far less often than those from datacenter proxies, which send requests from servers owned by hosting companies.
Websites check who owns each IP address, so they can flag and block datacenter proxy IP address ranges in bulk. IPRoyal's residential proxy infrastructure consists of real residential devices. You can tap into a large proxy pool of 64M+ real residential IP addresses for tasks like ad verification and web scraping.

Trusted & Secured Residential Proxy Network
How Our Customers Use Our Residential Proxy Service
Frequently Asked Questions
Are residential proxies safe?
Yes. Residential proxies are connected to household devices, which get their IP addresses from internet service providers. These proxy servers have some of the highest IP scores for trust and reputation, limiting IP address blocks.
Can residential proxies be detected?
Residential IPs carry the same reputation as regular household connections, so websites rarely flag them. You may, however, still receive an IP ban for other reasons, such as sending too many requests. In such cases, IP rotation should be used to lower the risks.
Who is the best residential proxy provider?
Every residential proxy provider tries to stand out from the competition in various ways. Some offer larger IP pools, others lower prices. IPRoyal stands out due to high success rates, easy scalability, and quick setup times while also maintaining quality and a large IP pool.
How fast are residential proxies?
Our response times for residential proxies are ~0.5s. But note that among all proxy types (i.e., residential, ISP, mobile, and datacenter proxies), residential IPs are the slowest by some metrics.
What are static and rotating residential proxies?
Static residential proxies (sometimes also called ISP proxies) provide you with an IP for a long period of time with no bandwidth limit and are usually sourced directly from an internet service provider. Residential rotating proxies, on the other hand, allow you to set intervals or rotate IPs with every request, letting you avoid IP blocks.
Are residential proxies legal?
Yes. Residential proxies use IP addresses assigned to regular household devices. In some cases, however, residential proxy usage may be subject to certain laws and terms, but most applications, such as market research, are rarely restricted.
How do you test residential proxies?
You can test your rotating and static proxies for any website with our IPRoyal Proxy Tester. It works on Windows and allows you to check your proxy type, speed, and the current status of multiple proxies at once. You can also filter the results and export working proxies in .txt format.
Does IPRoyal offer pay-as-you-go residential proxies?
Yes. Our proxy service is based on a pay-as-you-go model where you only pay for the traffic you use. Buying a larger amount of traffic at once includes significant discounts (up to 75%). Your residential proxies work for as long as you use up all the traffic.
Does IPRoyal offer unlimited bandwidth for residential proxies?
Our rotating residential proxies are billed per GB, and the traffic never expires. If you need the same IP for long periods, ISP Proxies (static residential proxies) are billed per IP rather than per GB, with leases for 1, 30, 60, or 90 days. They’re often used when you need to maintain the same identity for extended periods, for example, when managing multiple social media accounts
If your goal is to manage multiple social media accounts on any platform, we highly recommend picking static residential proxies over regular residential proxies.
Can I use IPRoyal residential proxies for DDoS attacks?
No. IPRoyal residential proxies (or any other service) explicitly prohibit any activities that cause damage, service disruption to our proxy users, or the internet at large. Any other illegal activity is also prohibited. You can find more information in our Terms of Service.
How much do residential proxies cost?
The cost of rotating proxies is based on traffic and purchase plan. Plans start at $7 per GB and can be discounted as low as $1.75 per GB when purchased in bulk. Your traffic never expires, so purchasing traffic in bulk is an extremely cost-effective option.
Can I use free proxies?
We don’t recommend using a free proxy network of any type (e.g., residential, datacenter, etc.) from a third-party provider unless a trial version is provided. Even the cheapest residential proxies will be better, as the provider can at least make back the cost of acquiring and managing the service. Otherwise, businesses offering free residential proxies have to make money through other means, which could pose a risk to your online privacy and security.
What is the difference between a residential VPN and a residential proxy?
A residential VPN is a Virtual Private Network where the server is created on a household device. VPNs route all traffic through the server and encrypt it. In contrast, a proxy is application-based, routing only traffic specific to that application through a household device. Both technologies replace your IP address as they route traffic through the intermediary.
How long do residential proxies last?
Residential IP proxies last as long as the household device is turned on. Additionally, a residential proxy provider may place other restrictions on their users that may change how long access is provided to that IP address. IPRoyal allows sticky sessions of up to 7 days.
Can residential proxies be used for web scraping with LLMs?
Yes. Residential and datacenter proxies can support AI-assisted workflows such as web scraping with Claude and other LLMs. They're also useful for web crawling and large-scale crawling list projects, helping access websites reliably by minimizing IP-based obstacles such as bans, blocks, and geo-restrictions.
Can residential proxies help with sentiment analysis projects?
Yes. Residential proxies help businesses gather publicly available text data at scale, including reviews, social media posts, and forum discussions. This data can then be processed using NLP sentiment analysis to evaluate customer opinions, monitor brand reputation, perform market research, and support decision-making.
Can I use residential proxies to unblock websites?
Yes. Residential proxies route your requests through genuine residential IP addresses, which allows you to unblock YouTube content that is restricted in your region. You can select residential IPs from specific countries and use sticky sessions to reach the content you need. In some cases, datacenter IPs might work too.
